Epoxy Coated Strand
Sumiden Wire Products Corporation (SWPC) has been producing ASTM A882 Epoxy Coated Strand (ECS) since 2000. Our product has gained a reputation in the industry for exceptional epoxy-to-steel adhesion and extremely uniform coating thicknesses. The ECS product has gained popularity in recent years as the post-tensioning material of choice for rock & soil anchors and mine roof bolts in unknown or aggressive soil/rock environments. ECS has also been used on several prestressed applications where marine splash zones are a concern.
In 2004, SWPC was awarded the contract for supplying our epoxy coated strand for the Waldo Hancock Stay Cable Bridge over the Penobscot River in Maine. In this project, SWPC ECS was anchored using Bite-through wedges; therefore the epoxy coating was able to remain on the strand all the way into the anchor plate. The superior anti-fatigue properties of ECS were also evidenced on this job with a 100% success rate during over 80 mono-strand and multi-strand fatigue tests.
The epoxy resin on ECS is applied in a factory controlled environment and is 100% inspected for pin-holes or holidays using an in-line detection system. The epoxy resin will elongate with the steel during stressing without cracking or losing adhesion.
In Japan and other parts of Asia, Epoxy Coated Strand’s ability to provide a reliable and consistent anti-corrosion barrier is so highly regarded that since 1994 over 100 bridges have been constructed using ECS as external post-tensioned tendons without PT ducts; thereby allowing for unimpeded access to the tendons throughout the life of the bridge.
