STAINLESS STEEL PC STRAND
Working closely with United States DOT's and universities, Sumiden Wire has successfully produced high-strength, low-relaxation stainless steel PC strand using USA melted and manufactured stainless steel wire rod. In order to achieve the needed strength and corrosion resistant properties, the stainless duplex alloy 2205 was used. This new and innovative product is now commercially available and specified in ASTM A1114. By offering both stainless steel PC strand and epoxy coated PC strand, Sumiden Wire is the clear industry leader providing owners/customers options for long-life prestressing steel products.
CORROSION RESISTANCE AND STRENGTH
The stainless steel duplex alloy 2205 was selected as the best alloy choice for the production of PC strand due to its combination of excellent corrosion resistance and high tensile strength. 2205 is not only very resistant to chloride-induced corrosion, but this alloy is also highly resistant to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (as shown in the chart).
PRESTRESSED CONCRETE PILING WITH STAINLESS STEEL PC STRAND
Many states with structures in coastal waters experience premature failure of prestressed concrete piling due to chloride-induced corrosion on the steel reinforcement. In an effort to address this widely experienced problem, prestressed concrete piles have been one of the first applications of 2205 stainless steel PC strand. In addition to the strand, stainless steel spiral reinforcement is also used when making these piles.
